This past week I was able to focus my time and attention on completing a DIY project to refinish a bedroom side table. This was a table that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. It had some damage to the finish on the top and it was never really “my style”. After 23 years, I finally decided to just go for it and give it a new look.

I started out by lightly sanding/roughing up the original finish. I then applied an all-in-one stain and top coat to the table top. I used a dark color to help hide the damaged places. It took several coats to achieve the coverage that I wanted and once it dried, I moved on to painting the body of the table.

I used chalk paint in a driftwood color on the body of the table. I have never used chalk paint before and I absolutely love it. It is so easy to use and allows you to paint over painted or stained surfaces without having to sand them down to bare wood. The chalk paint dries quickly and I had it finished within 2 hours.

After the chalk paint dried for 24 hours, I began applying a black chalk wax to the finish. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but the wax gave me just the look I was hoping for. I did purchase a brush for applying the wax and it made application very easy. It only took one coat and I was done.

Here’s the finished product. My husband loves it as much as I do. He is so happy to see it have “new life” again. Can’t wait to start on my next piece which is a 4 drawer chest with some surface damage. Who knows I may “chalk paint” everything in my house!! LOL

Stay safe everyone and keep trying new things!
