This week I began a six-week online college course through the Center for Legal Studies in order to obtain a current Legal Secretary Certificate. As I realized that I just wasn’t fulfilled in this new empty nest season, I made a decision to pursue a return to the workforce! I previously worked as a legal secretary for a corporate defense firm and after much thought and prayer, made a decision to update my skills and give it go again. This was not an easy decision as I have been a stay-at-home mom for 20 years. The reality is that my role has changed and so have my needs.
As I logged onto the course site for the first time and viewed the syllabus and assignments for the week, I knew it was going to take a lot of work to succeed. I spent the week reading, completing written assignments, writing an essay and taking a test. I haven’t worked this hard on anything in quite a while. Also, keep in mind that the last time I wrote an essay was in 1987!!! Overall, it was exciting to do something new and I am looking forward to sticking with it for 5 more weeks.
Now to “keep it real”, I certainly have experienced some doubts such as:
- Am I too old?
- Can I do this?
- What if I fail the course?
- What if no one hires me?
These are certainly possibilities, but I decided to focus on what could go right, NOT what could go wrong!! One thing is for certain, if you don’t try, the answer is always NO. Giving it my best effort and trusting God with the rest!
What’s the take away…..
- Your 50’s are a great time to reinvent yourself
- Never stop learning
- Take classes – there is so much opportunity online to pursue interests or new career
- Just do it! If it doesn’t work out, you’ve simply narrowed down your options and can move on to something else.
