I can definitely say that 2020 left me in need of a motivation reset. The new year deserves a fresh start and a fresh attitude. Many women over 50 find that staying motivated is much harder in this life season.

A study by The Families and Work Institute reveals that workers begin to loose ambition to get promotions or seek opportunities with more responsibility by around 35. This is especially true for women due to having children and raising families.

Women over 50 often experience a loss of interest in things that they once loved. Health problems, fear, loneliness and even grief contribute to this kind of disinterest.

Why You Need a Motivation Reset

Aging is a fact. The things that once inspired us change as we age. In this new season women are no longer pursuing money, goals, career success, and building a family. Attention is now placed on spouses, time with family and enjoying life.

Changing bodies and seasons of life should not stop you from living a full and enjoyable life.

Tips to Reset Your Motivation

1. Physical Health

Taking care of your physical health plays a major role in your overall sense of well being. Aching muscles and joints, wrinkles and fatigue can negatively impact your motivation.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to eat well and keep moving. Establishing a lifestyle of regular exercise and healthy eating gives you the fuel you need to pursue your goals. The rewards of a healthy lifestyle will benefit you for years to come.

2. Emotional Health

Most women live a hurried life filled with stress and worry. Find ways to lighten the load and reduce your stress. Turning your focus toward building strong relationships with friends and family will improve your motivation.

Don’t allow negative situations or people to influence your happiness. Seek out like minded people to be your “community”. These are the people who will encourage your growth and goals.

3. Rethink Goals

Sometimes we need to reassess our goals and remember why we set them. Thinking about what that achievement or goal will mean can “reset” your “mindset”!

4. Partners

Many women find that having an accountability partner helps them stay on track. Having a positive person speak into your life is a huge boost. A smile and an encouraging word goes a long way to cheer you on.

5. Inspiration

Lift your spirits by reading or listening to motivational quotes and advice. The inspiration of others success is contagious and can breath new life into your efforts.

6. Rest and Recharge

Your body and mind are powerful and sometimes simply need to recharge and rest. Allow yourself time to relax and re-energize. You can’t give away what you don’t possess.

7. Try Something New

Be open to new things. Trying something new often sparks your motivation. Reward your hard work with a vacation to inspire you. A different location and new perspective allows you to leave behind the old and seek new adventures.

Final Thoughts

One of the best ways to get out of a slump is to help someone else. Use your wisdom, knowledge and experience to serve others. Nothing is more motivating than feeling valued, having purpose and making a difference.

Don’t let stagnation set in. Embrace the “over 50” season and find ways to reset your motivation. Pursue your goals and enjoy the journey!

About a week ago, I decided to take my own advice and do a little purging in our bonus room and attic. While in the attic I noticed an ornate mirror that I had completely forgotten we owned. My brain began to see a vision of this outdated mirror becoming a thing of beauty again. And so began my second DIY mirror transformation.

A Little Mirror History

Robby inherited this mirror from his parents when their home was sold. It originally belonged to either his mother or grandmother. The mirror is in the gold baroque style popular in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The frame is a lightweight plastic and the mirror itself is quite heavy.

Unfortunately, the mirror does not fit my style and never found a home on our walls. It has spent the last 20 years in basements and attics forgotten until last week.

My Vision

Pulling the mirror out of the attic, I could see it with an aged old world finish. I have done this process with another mirror and was confident my vision would work. The plan includes painting the frame with silver metallic chalk paint and then finishing with black chalk wax. I couldn’t wait to begin the mirror transformation.

The Process

I want to share the process step by step so you can see exactly what I did. This is really an easy way to give new life to any kind of mirror or picture frame.

1. Clean & Prep

The first step is to clean the mirror of dust and dirt. Once clean, tape the inside edge of the mirror to protect it from paint.

2. Apply First Coat of Silver Paint

After the mirror is prepped, it is time to start painting. I use a small sponge brush to apply a silver metallic chalk paint. The reason I use a sponge is because the paint is very thin and it will allow me to get into all of the crevices of the frame design.

I also chose to work in a room where the natural light is bright. The metallic paint can be tricky on the eyes without good lighting. You will miss a lot of spots if you can’t see what you are doing.

3. Let Dry and Apply Second Coat of Silver Paint

Chalk paint does not take a long time to dry. I did wait several hours before applying the second coat. This painting process is not going to give you a solid covering. If a solid covering is what you want, then spray painting would probably be the best option.

This project needs a little “dinge” to come through and that is exactly what you get with chalk paint. The second coat was easy to apply and I successfully covered the nooks and crannies with the paint. I could already see how lovely this mirror transformation was going to be.

4. Black Wax and Final Clean Up

The mirror dried overnight and the next afternoon I began applying the black chalk wax. I use a brush that is made just for this process. They can be a little pricey, however, it is well worth the money. The brush allows you to get into all the crevices with the wax. This will create the “aged” look that I wanted.

The wax is easy to apply and the first coat took about 12 minutes to complete. I allowed a couple of hours for the wax to set and assessed whether I would need a second coat. After some thought, I decided to apply another light coating of black chalk wax. And just like that my vision for this mirror transformation was complete!

My Final Thoughts

It gives me great joy to see the transformation of this mirror. New life has been given to a once loved but outdated piece of decor. No longer will it be delegated to attics and basements. A fine wall will highlight its new beauty and history as well.

So don’t throw out those outdated pieces of decor. Try giving them a new look with this easy to do process.

Like many women, I have set goals for 2021. All of my goals include growth spiritually, in skills and in leadership. What kind of goals and growth are you setting for 2021?

Right now 2021 may not seem much different from 2020. One thing is guaranteed, change will happen. You see change is automatic. Hopefully that change will be for the better.

John Maxwell points out “Change is automatic but growth is not.” Growth is intentional. It requires intentional action on our part.

I made a decision to invest in myself this year by setting goals for growth. I believe that I am worthy of the effort to better my knowledge and skills and put that knowledge into practice.

How do you see yourself? You see, how you view yourself will determine whether you will invest in yourself. The burden is on you to create change in your life.

The principle is quite simple. You reap what you sow. You can’t reap a harvest if you don’t sow seed. What you sow will certainly show up in your life.

If you want to grow in an area, then you must sow seed in that area. Read books, seek classes, join others who are succeeding. Find ways to learn what you don’t know. Daily habits over time yield great results.

It is through consistent habits that we achieve success. Keep in mind …. NO ONE ELSE is going to do the work for you! It is your responsibility.

Achieving goals and growth in 2021 will only happen when you strategically invest in yourself. I hope that the lessons we learned in 2020 will be the catalyst for growth and success in 2021.

Be the change maker in your life!

I do love to learn and that is what I have been doing with Hello Fresh meal kits. If you’ve read any of my posts on cooking, then you know that I do not enjoy the task. In addition I am not particularly skilled in the kitchen.

Each week I choose 3 meals for two and have them delivered to my house. The box contains all of the ingredients to prepare each recipe. Easy to follow instructions with gorgeous pictures are also included. Even a non-skilled cook like me can prepare restaurant quality meals with this method.

There are a variety of recipes from which to choose. In addition, each recipe provides information about ingredients and how much time it will take to prepare. One of the categories is the “gourmet” recipes. These take a little more time and skill. I got brave one week and chose “Duck A L’Orange”. Here is how it worked out!

Duck A L’Orange

The complete meal is Duck A L’Orange with Duck Fat Mashed Potatoes & Arugula Almond Salad. Let’s just say I was ecstatic to see that a salad was one of the sides. I knew I could pull that off!!

Similar recipes on the internet usually call for a whole duck to be cooked. The beauty of the Hello Fresh meal kits system is that the meals are perfectly portioned for two or four people. My meal kit included 2 duck breasts rather than a whole duck.

A Peak At The Process

  1. First I chopped all of the produce. I simply like to get the “chopping” done all at once.
  2. Next, I began boiling the potatoes.
  3. Cooking the duck was next. I have never cooked duck before, so this was a new experience. I started out with the heat too high and quickly figured that I needed to cook it a little slower. This was probably the most difficult part of the recipe for me.
  4. I then prepared the orange sauce. The sauce includes a variety of ingredients, so reading the instructions is important.
  5. Once the duck was done, the orange sauce and a few other ingredients went into the pan with butter. And just like that a beautiful sauce resulted.
  6. The potatoes were mashed with sour cream.
  7. Lastly the salad ingredients were combined and ready to plate.

The Result

My favorite thing about the Hello Fresh recipes is that when cooking is complete, you simply divide the food between two plates. It is so simple. I believe my efforts turned out well. By the way, it tasted delicious too. Robby said it was one of his favorites.

Picture of completed recipe Duck A L'Orange

Without question, this was one of the most difficult recipes that I have tried. I felt very proud to have cooked this dish and that it turn out great! I have learned so many new things about food and cooking though this experience.

Hello Fresh meal kits have changed our eating habits for the better. I am actually excited to get my box each week and now I enter the kitchen with confidence. There is no waste and all containers are recyclable. I highly recommend Click below and choose a plan to get started today!

The new year is the perfect time to purge and organize. January’s cold weather and COVID restrictions provide time to take those untidy spaces and work on getting organized.

The hanging closet organizer is one of my favorite tools for getting organized. For years I only saw it for use with shoes. The truth is that it can be a multi-use organizer and space saver for almost anything.

Over the door hanging closet organizers are generally inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes and materials. Here are some “outside the box” tips on how to use them to organize any cluttered space.

1. Cleaning Supplies

Let’s be honest. We all have a cabinet that is stuffed with cleaning products of various shapes and sizes. Cleaning cloths, gloves and other tools are found there as well.

Using cabinet space for storing cleaning supplies makes your products hard to see and hard to reach. By simply placing the cleaners and tools in a plastic closet organizer, you can see every product and easily access what you need.

In addition, greater visibility will prevent you from buying “extras” when you don’t need them.

2. Paper Products

We all want to have plenty of paper towels and toilet paper. The packaging of these products makes them hard to store on shelves or in closets.

A great solution is to use a long narrow style of hanging closet organizer. The storage spaces are the perfect size for holding paper towels and toilet paper rolls. This removes them from the floor or shelves and again let’s you see what you have available.

3. Underclothing

Most women have a drawer or two full of bras, panties, socks and other undergarments. These items are hard to fold and maintain in a drawer in any kind of sensible manner.

Using a hanging closet organizer with plenty of clear pockets will keep these items together and organized. No more looking through dark drawers for matching socks or that strapless bras. Your items will be out sight to guests but easily accessible to you!

4. Games/Toys

One of the hardest areas to organize is the toy/game category. A hanging closet organizer is the perfect solution for storing games and small toy pieces. Using one with square pockets will make it easy to stack game boxes so that you or your children can easily find what they want to play. Clean up is a breeze also!

5. Office/Craft Supplies

Small items are the most difficult to keep up with in a drawer or cabinet. Paper clips, pens, scissors, tape, special markers, envelopes, and note cards all seem to find their way to the back of the drawer because they move around so easily.

Place these items in a plastic hanging closet organizer and you will have all of your supplies at your fingertips. Everything is visible and your desk/workspace is clean. This is one of my favorite ideas. No one wants to waste time looking for the stapler that slid to the back of the desk drawer!

Whatever your organizing need may be, think outside the box and try hanging closet organizers as a solution!

The day we all have been waiting for is finally here. It’s time to say goodbye and farewell to “2020”!! Yes, 2020 may have been a year where your goals got sidelined. It’s okay to acknowledge that things didn’t go so well. The point is not to stay in that negative space. Goal setting for 2021 is just what we all need to do!

2021 is fresh and new and yes it’s time to give some thought to the next 365 days. While COVID19 restrictions may not have changed yet, they will! There is hope in the new year. Having goals creates a sense that you have choice in your life.

We need focus and goal setting provides a positive outlet so that we aren’t simply wandering through each day or week with no real end in mind. Setting goals that stretch us and call us to action are crucial to our mental and physical health.

It’s time to take a look at where you’ve been and where you want to go. What goals do you want to achieve in 2021? Some worthy topics for thought are: personal growth, health, finances, learning new skills, and spiritual growth. All of these areas can be the starting point for goal setting.

Tips for Goal Setting

1. Be Specific

Vague or broad goals are not achievable. Those kinds of goals will only leave you feeling defeated. Be very specific with your goals. You can’t just say “I want to exercise more.” But you can say “I want to walk 30 minutes at lunch Monday through Friday.” That is a very specific goal.

2. Goals Must Be Measurable

Any goal must be measured. How can you recognize your progress if you can’t track it. Set up daily and weekly means by which you can track your progress. Oh yeah, it’s okay to “miss the mark”. Simply pick up where you are and get back on the routine.

3. Set A Time Limit

A goal with no end in sight can feel overwhelming. Create a deadline for your goals. Doing this will allow you to create a plan of action and measure your progress. This is the best way reach the end result and fulfill your goal.

4. Write It Down

Writing down your goals creates a mental commitment in your mind. It also gives you a visual that you can look at each day. Seeing your goals before you will help you stay motivated and follow through.

Goal Ideas

If you are having a little trouble getting started, then here are some ideas for 2021 goal setting:

  • Begin a new devotion or church group
  • Eat veggies with dinner each night
  • Drink X amount of water each day
  • Read books or take courses to improve your work skills
  • Set a budget and save $X amount each month
  • Pursue deeper connection with friends through texts, calls and visits

Final Thoughts

Always remember that life will throw you a few curves. Don’t let a few “hiccups” get you frustrated and wanting to give up. Stay the course. Get back on it by pursuing your goals. Your daily habits over time will take you to your desired success.

It is no secret that I am a wine lover. Specifically, I am a white wine lover. Riesling is my favorite type of wine and Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling is one of my favorite brands.

I haven’t always liked wine. In my late 20’s I discovered the different varieties and tastes of wine and there began my love. My “go to” wines are always a Chardonnay or a Riesling. I find both are smooth and easy on the palette.

Origin of Riesling

The origin of Riesling wine is German. Many consider it to be the finest white grape variety in the world. If you want to read more about the history of this wine, click here. Of note, German and Californian Rieslings tend to be sweeter. French and New York brands are more dry.

Chateau Ste. Michelle

One of my all time favorite brands of Riesling wine is Chateau Ste. Michelle Harvest Select Sweet Riesling from Columbia Valley Washington.

The Harvest select is slightly sweeter than their other Riesling. You will taste the peaches but they will be balanced by the acidity from the Washington area. The Riesling wine often reflects where it is grown. The grape grown for Riesling is very versatile and can be very sweet or dry and still enjoyable.

Chateau Ste. Michelle History

Here is a little history about Chateau Ste. Michelle. It is the oldest winery in Washington and was founded in 1934.

The winery combines old world style with new world innovation. This winery is known for its award winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Chateau Ste. Michelle has two wineries. One winery is dedicated to white wines and the other to only reds.

Food Pairings

Because the Riesling is such a versatile wine, it pairs well with many different kinds of foods. Pair fish, or salty, fried foods with a drier variety of Riesling. The sweet variety is an excellent choice for spicy foods. has a great offering of Riesling wines including Chateau Ste. Michelle Harvest Select Sweet Riesling. Click here to give it a try. You will not be disappointed.
